Flights for an Overnight Trip to Pennsylvania

August 13-14, 2025. I made an overnight trip to Washington, Pennsylvania to watch the Pony League World Series. This would be a very brief rundown about the flights back and forth, together with a few photos from the match.

Delta Airlines flight 5731 from Boston to Pittsburgh

Facing time constraints on Wednesday afternoon, I chose to fly Delta from Boston to Pittsburgh—a decision made easier by the Delta credits I had on hand. The basic economy fare was $89, comparable to other airlines and, in my opinion, quite reasonable.

Delta Airlines 5731 Operated by Republic Airways
Boston, MA (BOS) – Pittsburgh, PA (PIT)
Embraer ERJ-175 (N240JQ)
Seat 20A
Scheduled Departure – 11:40am
Actual Departure – 11:50am
Scheduled Arrival – 1:31pm
Actual Arrival – 1:07pm
1 hour and 17 minutes
Here’s GPS tracking:

Apart from some bumps over Susquehannock State Forest, the flight was otherwise largely uneventful. We approached Pittsburgh Airport from the east, treated to lovely views of downtown Pittsburgh in the process. Had it not been for scattered clouds hovering over the city at around 800m elevation, my first time flying into Pittsburgh might have been marked by even more exciting vistas.

A significant disappointment on this flight stemmed from my mistaken belief that Delta provided free WiFi across its entire fleet. However, according to their website, this amenity excluded certain regional aircraft. Consequently, only paid WiFi was available on this flight—likely because it was operated by Republic Airways, which is not a wholly owned Delta subsidiary.

After that, I grabbed some lunch on my way to the hotel, managed to get some work done, and then made my way to the ballpark.
Perhaps because the host area team (Washington County, Pennsylvania) had made it to the finals, there was considerable traffic entering the ballpark, far more than what I’d experienced a few years ago. Fortunately, I didn’t miss the game’s start.

Below is a quick rundown of selected photos I took during the game. Much like the Junior League World Series game three days prior, I was too lazy to properly title them. These photos are in the public domain.

American Airlines flight 4587 and 4376 from Pittsburgh to Boston via New York Kennedy

The next morning, I was hoping to make it back to Boston not-too-late for the day’s work, hence I booked myself on the day’s earliest flights. Between Delta and JetBlue that offered direct flights from Pittsburgh to Boston, only Delta’s schedule suited me, but it was somewhat expensive, hence I decided to fly American with a connection in New York JFK. This was purchased during American’s award sale, costing only 5k American miles.

Probably because this was an early morning flight at 6am in the middle of the week, my upgrade was confirmed well in advance. Pittsburgh Airport offered a priority security lane which, according to the monitor, had shorter wait times than the general lane, though neither was particularly long.

Breakfast at The Club Lounge

On my way to the boarding gate, I stopped by The Club Lounge. The sausage omelet breakfast—accompanied by a cookie and yogurt—was, quite honestly, among the better offerings I had encountered at PPS lounges across the United States.

As for the flight, we passed over New York City during our descent into JFK. Unfortunately, I was absorbed in work on my laptop and missed the most spectacular stretch of the skyline.

Of eastern Manhattan and Long Island City. About a minute ago I could have taken a photo of the entire Manhattan skyline.

Shortly after flying past Manhattan, I captured what was likely the most captivating photograph of this trip (featured at the top of this post): sun beams piercing through the overhanging clouds, illuminating the glittering waves off Long Beach. Somehow, sunrise scenes hadn’t disappointed me on my recent flights.

Not much to talk about for this final leg of the trip.
An interesting discovery once I got off the plane in Boston: after “missing” the Silver Line bus to downtown by mere seconds, I chose to walk run across Terminal B’s parking garage, which was faster than the bus could navigate around it, hence I managed to board the very bus I had supposedly missed.
